What makes Supima cotton special?
Unique quality
Supima cotton is an extra-long staple cotton, considered among the world's finest. It represents less than 1% of global cotton production, making it a rare and select raw material. The name itself comes from "Superior" and "Pima," a variety of cotton already considered highly prized.
Maruei Towel, the Japanese manufacturer of Imabari Premium Supima towels, is the only one in Japan officially recognized by the prestigious Supima Association. This represents its commitment to creating high-quality products that last.
Extra-long fiber
The fibres of this cotton are longer and more regular than normal and allow for the production of much smoother and more compact yarns than traditional cotton: this translates into an incredibly soft fabric, resistant to washing and less prone to losing shape or pilling.
Furthermore, Supima retains colours better, maintaining the whiteness and brightness of the fabric for a long time.
Exceptional absorbency and comfort
In the Premium Supima line, the cotton is spun into untwisted yarns to further enhance its softness and water-absorbing properties right from the first use.
The twist of the yarn is very important for the towel's durability and strength: normally, any cotton yarn is created by twisting the fibers on themselves to obtain the most compact yarn possible. The Premium Supima line uses a special loom, which creates a cotton yarn that undergoes little mechanical twisting, unlike traditional industrial looms: this makes the yarn of Imabari towels more resistant over time and able to easily absorb water.
